State Flora started as the Woods and Forests Department which pioneered the introduction of tubestock growing for Australian plants - and which remains the main method of growing Australian native plants today.
State Flora's Belair Nursery pre-dates the establishment of the Belair National Park by 5 years. Belair Nursery was proclaimed by an act of parliament in 1886 on 9 acres of land adjacent to Old Government House and was known as Woods and Forest Nursery. In 1993 it was renamed 'State Flora Nursery'.
This Belair Nursery is surrounded by a mix of 100 year old Australian and exotic trees and is renowned for its beautiful tranquil setting with abundant natural bird life, which adds to that special experience when visiting the nursery. Other frequent visitors to the nursery and its surrounds include emus and kangaroos while the distinctive seasonal mating sounds of male Koalas add to the intrigue of Belair Nursery.
